Northern Territory Indigenous Music Awards have gone National

The Northern Territory Indigenous Music Awards have gone national becoming the ‘National Indigenous Music Awards‘ (NIMAs). The awards event, known as “the ARIAs of Indigenous Music”, is now in its 8th year. The change means that there are now three new national award categories. Besides providing a platform for Indigenous musicians outside the NT, these developments also bring greater exposure to artists from the Northern Territories.

Nominations for the NIMAs are currently open and will close on July 22nd, 2011. Any individual or organisation working in the Australian Music Industry can submit artists/acts (signed or unsigned) for nomination.

The Awards Ceremony will be held at Darwin’s Gardens Amphitheatre on Friday 19 Aug 2011. 

Human Rights 2011 – Sydney event with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Ms Navi Pillay

UN Commissioner for Human Rights Ms Navi Pillay will be making her first visit to Australia in May 2011. She will be speaking at ‘Human Rights 2011′, a free event that is open to the public. Other speakers are Prof. Patrick Dodson and Paris Aristotle. The Bengarra Dance Theatre will be performing as part of the program.

The event and will be held at the Sydney Town Hall, on May 23rd, 2011 from 5pm-7pm. Registration is required and can be completed online. More online information @ Australian Human Rights Commission.

Guwanyi – 3rd National Aboriginal Writers’ Festival

The NSW Writers' Centre

This month the 3rd National Aboriginal Writers’ Festival will be held at the NSW Writer’s Centre in Rozelle on March 19th. The all-day event, titled ‘Guwanyi’ which means ‘to tell’, celebrates the oral traditions and written influences of Aboriginal cultures on contemporary Australian society. Featured speakers include authors Dr. Anita Heiss, Peter Minter and Bruce Pascoe. The day covers topics such as:

• A History of Aboriginal Writing
• The Future of Indigenous Literature
• Getting Indigenous Stories out there
• Poetic Justice

The day commences at 10am and finishes with drinks ‘On The Veranda’ at 5-6pm. It will be a great place to hear from established authors and meet Australia’s emerging writing talent.

Human Rights Arts & Film Festival (HRAFF)

In its second year, this Melbourne Film, Music & Arts Festival is coming to Sydney from Thursday December 4th to Sunday December 7th. This festival seems to be attracting all the right kind of attention and has plenty of support. Check out their website – it has great links to other Human Rights festivals around the world. African Perspectives: Recent African Cinema

Where would Sydney film-goers be without Dendy? If you’re sick of cinematic take-away, then you’ll appreciate having a place like this in town. I’m certainly glad they’re giving us this African Film Festival. They’re showing 5 films over 3 days – from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th of December. Screenings include the Oscar-nominated ‘War Dance’ by directors Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine. The festival is being presented in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art.
